Sidewalk in a Mining Camp

sidewalk in a mining camp
the boom has long gone bust
head wheels now stand silent
how they gather rust

fall has drawn to winter
rain and fog survive
empty lots and empty bins
still we are alive

sidewalk in a mining camp
changes like the season
stand there month and moment
shake your head and reason

what has been production
to depth or great divide
the point was once to prosper
grandeur to decide

a limit to the landings
random without fuss
left is only a fog
no limit to the dust

long has gone the shadow
from the summer leaves
reason now distorted
levels by degrees

standing on the sidewalk
an empty one at that
reminder of the old days
money in the camp

the city was a magnet
roulette like a rush
fog binds the open
ushers to a hush

A Halloween Goody!!

Look what a got in the mail! The most wonderful book by Cindy Tevis of the Shabby Hag! She recently had a give-away at her Halloween Poetry blog, I Dream of Halloween, for a Halloween book of her original Halloween poetry and illustrations. And it is marvelous! Thank you Cindy!! I feel very lucky to have won this little treasure! Now if I can only talk her into selling some....

You really must stop by her blog - she is having a virtual open house at her blog, The Shabby Hag, on Tuesday She has been clearing out some closets and will be offering up goody boxes of art/craft supplies for the cost of postage. Can't wait to see what she has!

Where the Pumpkins Grow

Where the Pumpkins Grow
from a journal written by
Donna Turnbull

Down in the fields where the pumpkins grow,
Magic lies there as we well know.
Dark is the night and the stars grow pale.
October winds make a howling gale.
Black is the night and gold is the moon.
Witches are riding and none too soon.
Black cats are yowling with backs arched high,
While the moon glows gold in the midnight sky.
Owls hoot, 'whoo, whoo' and look very wise.
And bats fly eerily across the skies.
Goblins and witches and shosts are seen.
For this, you remember is Hallow'een!

Trail of Gold

Trail of Gold
from a journal written by
Donna Turnbull
(My Mother)

King Midas passed this way today and left a trail of gold.
The lanes of yellow goldenrod mark pathways where he trod.

He chased the wild canaries through all the woodland trees.
The sunflowers by the roadside prove his activities.

The colors rival the yellow sun; the world is aureoled.
King Midas passed this way today and left a trail of gold.

Halloween Poetry Cards

A few items have been waiting patiently for me while we were partaking of the brew last week.

I had entered an epitaph contest at Halloween Spirit's Poetry Blog, I Dream of Halloween . And I won a set of wonderful poetry cards! These cards were created by Halloween Spirit herself! And she even composed the poems! They are so awesome!! I think I will frame them.
When you're out blopping around, stop in at her blog, The Shabby Hag, and say 'Hi' !

Friday's Tid~Bits

Here's some odds-n-ends for you....

Halloween Spirit has a really cool Halloween Poetry Blog. She currently has an Epitaph contest going on and is accepting votes for the entries she received. But hurry! The voting ends Saturday (tomorrow) at midnight! The Witching Hour!

I now have a shop open at Foxberry Folk Art. Check it out in your web wanderings!

A bit of Halloween trivia:

  • According to superstition, if you stare into a mirror at midnight on Halloween, you will see your future spouse.

  • If you see a spider on Halloween, it is the spirit of a loved on watching over you.

  • Chocolate candy bars top the list as the most popular candy for trick-or-treaters with Snickers #1. (WHAT? It's not Candy Corn??)
