<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">What better way to celebrate May Day than with an odoriferous post!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">A few weeks back Pepe came for a visit at our house and one of the Dogs encountered him. Actually, he showed up in the middle of the night.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">One of the Dogs just HAD to go outside in the middle of the night. So Hubby gets up and lets the Dogs <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">out<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> - without thinking. Then we realized just why the Dog HAD to go outside. He had heard something lurking in the yard (why can't they do that when the Coon is snooping around?)

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Well, Hubby let the Dog back in the house not realizing the Dog had been sprayed, Hubby just thought Dog had scared a skunk away from the yard. Dog then promptly came into our bedroom and immediately tried to rub the spray off his neck and chest onto our carpet! AUGH!!!!!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">So, at 2am I ushered Dog back outside, Hubby to bed and set a bowl of vinegar in bedroom to kill some of the odor so Hubby could get some sleep. I then researched what to use on Dog. And carpet.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Long story short, I used hydrogen peroxide and baking soda on Dog. I made a mixture of the two with some added dog shampoo which contained coconut oil. I rubbed this mix into his fur especially around the neck and chest where the skunk had sprayed. I let it sit for about 5 minutes then added water and proceeded to wash Dog. Hubby came home later with a skunk deodorizer shampoo which worked very well.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Bedroom carpet was cleaned with skunk deodorizer shampoo and then again with regular rug shampoo. Dog also received another bath three days later. Faint odor lasted about 2 wks but Hubby said it was all in my head - he couldn't smell it. I have since taken measures to help insure Pepe can no longer come to visit the yard. I have planted flowers on the outside of the fence!

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Thank you for the comments on my last post.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Dog's Mother - Kudos to your daughter! I am discovering more and more of her generation truly appreciate the craftsmanship which went into the old houses.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Mittens - I love to hear stories about people who have lovingly restored these glorious homes. Hubby and I have always been on the 'other end' of the house restoration - we restore the house and then end up selling it and moving on to the next one. This is the first time we have owned a house which has already been restored (at least 95%). There are some things we wish to do to give it that "POP". We want to restore the gingerbread around the front eave, upgrade the front porch light, new picket fence.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">All minor details. But then, The Devil is in the Details......Jeannehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15918915129013117664noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467888874873928043.post-51188461916306384732018-04-17T01:30:00.001-06:002018-04-17T01:30:38.841-06:00Soul-less Houses<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">There's a saying, "The Devil is in the Details".
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This couldn't be more accurate when it comes to the Victorian Houses found in small towns across the globe. It used to be main-stream thinking to demolish these old beauties and put up some under-engineered stick built dwelling. In many locales, these houses are seen as a boon to the community and they have been lovingly restored. In some towns, developers have gotten hold of these homes and have kept the exterior but have completely 'modernized' the interior. Tearing out and not replacing beautiful woodwork, ornate doorknobs, or other details which add to the charm, the Soul of the House.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Those are the Soul-less Houses.
<span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">When gaming was established in Colorado. There was a new kind of land rush to the state. People focused on making a quick buck swooped in, bought up real estate (both commercial and private), and then did their darnedest to turn a quick profit. I understand that the commercial establishments had to do a fair amount of remodeling in order to bring old buildings up to the modern building safety codes. But I think that a little more care could have been taken in designing the brand new buildings so they blended in with the old ones a wee bit better.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">To me, the details say it all about a house. And all the people, who over the years, have left their mark on that house. Our house was purchased, along with several others, by a retired gentleman in the 1990's, not long after gaming was established. This man did his best to modernize these houses and yet retain as much of the old charm as he could. I commend this guy! And it is because of his attention to detail that we have a home with a Soul.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Old Homestead House was the most notorious Parlour House in Cripple Creek and is only one of three historic buildings of this type (brothel) known to exist in the US. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Pearl De Vere began her business career in Denver and became wealthy by catering to only the richest men. She came to Cripple Creek in 1893 to capitalize on the wealth created by the gold rush. One night with one of her 'girls' cost upwards of $250! And this was in a time when $3 a day was considered good wages for a miner. Needless to say, most of her clientele<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> were the wealthy business men of the District.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Old Homestead House is located on Meyers Avenue, the red light district of Cripple Creek. Brothels and 'cribs' (small houses for prostitutes - generally one room) lined this street. The original building was a wood structure and it burned to the ground in the Fire of 1895 which burned most of the town of Cripple Creek. Pearl had the building rebuilt, but this time it was constructed from bricks. She spared no expense in the construction and especially in the decorating of the interior. Velvet wallpaper was purchased for the dining room, brass door and cabinet hardware came from India, electric crystal chandeliers hung from the ceilings, a telephone was installed along with an intercom<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">. And the new building had two indoor bathrooms! <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The upstairs rooms had windows so that gentlemen callers could view 'the goods' before deciding on who they would stay the night with. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">During this tragic time, Pearl was most generous to those affected by the fire by providing food and other needed items.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Cripple Creek Ice Festival takes place every February for two weekends. What a great way to break up the winter doldrums. Only thing is, it really hasn't been much like winter around here. We have had such extreme temperature swings! Almost Spring-like for a few days, then a storm blows in and brings us a small amount of snow and some frigid temperatures. The last couple years has seen warm temperatures for the Ice Fest and the ice begins melting not long after the first day. But this year was a little different. We had snow arrive on the first day and moderately chilly temperatures continued throughout the first weekend.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Ice Festival is an interactive ice sculpture event with a different theme every year. The public is encouraged to touch, sit, and enjoy the sculptures carved by the sculpting teams. This year's theme was Renaissance in Ice with five professional ice sculpting teams who turned the downtown area into a medieval wonderland complete with an ice castle, dragon ice slide, carnival games in ice and for the adults a martini ice luge.
That was just in case the gold strike didn't 'pan out' .
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">And just like developers today, the land planners of yesterday wanted to get as many homes and people into as little space as possible. So homes were built extremely close to each other. So close, that sometimes the roofs would hang over each other. Making it very difficult to paint between the houses (probably a chore for the children).
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Building houses this close together was fairly common in old mountain mining towns. And created a unique set of problems, besides the painting and maintenance, you can hear the neighbors. Their alarm clock. Their phone. Their...well...you get the idea. The picture below is between my house and the neighbor's. I'm just glad I have nice neighbors. Hope they say the same about us! There is enough room between our homes that a grown person can walk.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">I live in a volcano. An extinct one. At least I hope it is.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">"Geologically Cripple Creek is a freak.", reported the Chicago Times in 1896. "It is a vast crater bed in which the elements once were wont to make merry with nature and play unexpected pranks that must have caused the systematic old dame many a vexatious hour."

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The City of Cripple Creek can be seen sitting in a basin
which is an extinct caldera

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Cripple Creek sits in a caldera measuring 24 square miles. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">When the caldera collapsed, giant size rocks were thrown about the basin. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The caldera is surrounded on all sides by a combination of quartz, feldspar, and mica. As eons passed by, more volcanic activity took place causing mineral rich solutions to fill the empty faults and fissures. These hardened over time and became the minerals which are now being mined near town. As more years passed, these mineral rich veins made their way closer to the surface only to be buried once again by granite, gneiss, and schist. Erosion later took its toll on some areas, exposing bits of the precious commodity.
January has been frosty, creating beauty wherever a person might look. I encourage you to click on the photos to look at them in detail. The second photo is of the clouds pushed up against the mountains (as seen from the overlook above town). In the third photo the snow was so dry and powdery. A person can actually see the arms of on the snowflakes. The fourth photo is of my ice plant in bloom during some of the warm weather. So nice to see flowers this time of year.

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Newmont Mining Corp. will be mining here until at least 2025. This year they are planning on extracting gold from the place where it all started - Poverty Gulch. Loosening and breaking the rock apart is a key component in mining. And that process means that explosives must be used.
But modern day blasting is a far cry from the sticks of dynamite used a century ago. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Today's explosives are dropped into a small, deep hole and then the hole is filled with sand. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">If it's done correctly, a person can stand in relative close proximity to the blasting hole and never know the charge ever went off. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Us? When the pit was first begun, bristlecone pines dotted the <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">top of the mountain. Seeds from their cones were collected so that they might be used to grow young trees to reforest the mountaintop. Newmont is also working with a State University to develop a method to grow aspen from roots. Aspen are notoriously hard to transplant. Areas which have been seeded - much like the road department will seed the side of the roadway - are constantly monitored for health and stability. But I have faith in the methods used by Newmont. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Gold production continued until it tapered off in the 1920's, with a brief resurgence in the 1930's. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">An open pit mine is just what it sounds like. A great big hole in the ground that keeps getting bigger because of the rocks (minerals/ore) that are being taken out of the hole. Blasting (with explosives) is done which loosens the rock near or just below the surface of the ground. Large heavy equipment then takes out the loose rock to be processed. This process of blasting and hauling rock is repeated over and over until the ore is all extracted. Roads are built around the sides of the pit to allow the heavy trucks to drive down to the bottom.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">The gold found here is not in the form of a nugget or dust. It is found mixed in with other minerals and must be separated from these other components via a leaching process. The ore bearing rock is sent to a crusher then on to a mill for processing. Once the rocks have been milled down to a more manageable size, they are then taken to a leach pit where the precious minerals are extracted. A diluted Potassium Cyanide solution is sprayed on the crushed gold bearing ore in the leach pit. The cyanide trickles down through the rocks, binding with the gold and silver. At the bottom of the pit are carbon filters which trap the cyanide/gold mixture.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">This post and several in the coming weeks will be written to enlighten people - especially those living in cities - about life in this small rural mountain town.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Electricity - Yes. We have electricity. In fact, Cripple Creek has had electric power since 1897.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Water - Yes. We have municipal water. Just like the majority of the people who are reading this. And yes, we have indoor bathrooms. Though the last outhouse was in use until the mid 1980's.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Internet - While we do have internet capabilities, they are not high speed. My internet arrives via a satellite dish.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">TV - If a person would like a variety of channels (we only get two channels via an antenna), then a satellite dish is necessary.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Mail & Packages - Even though this is a municipality, we do not have residential mail delivery. A post office box must be secured to receive mail via the postal service. <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> (this has been one of the hardest things for people<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;"> to wrap their heads around... go figure...) <span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Fedex and UPS do deliver here.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Streets - The majority of the streets in Cripple Creek are paved. But there are only two paved streets in the neighboring town of Victor. In order to pave streets, a city must have funds to do so. Victor does not have the funding nor the population to provide funds to pave streets. Victor has a population of 403 people. Cripple Creek has a population of 1,175 people. Both of those figures were per the 2016 census.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Weather - Even though we are located at an elevation of over 9400ft, the weather here is more temperate than most people think. Most of the weather systems arrive from the south and this brings us warmer, wetter weather than most places in the high mountains. We do get a lot of fog though. That's not to say that Cripple Creek doesn't get its fair share of snow and nasty weather. But those times usually occur in the Spring months.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Casinos - Yes, Cripple Creek does have legal gambling with numerous casinos located on the main road in town. No, this is not like Las Vegas. Victor does not have gambling. More on this later.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Gold Mine - Both Cripple Creek and Victor are located in an active mining area. This means that the landscape is subject to change. More in another post.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Stores - We have one convenience store, two gas stations, a hardware/lumber store, a medical clinic, a nursing home and a small grocery store here. Oh, and a Family Dollar store. There are several small touristy shops found here in Cripple Creek as well. The grocery store, while it is small, has everything that would be needed and the prices are really comparable to stores in the closest 'big city' of Woodland Park. I make a once a week trip to Woodland Park for groceries. There is also a library and school located here.
<span style="font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">Commuters - Yes. Hubby is still working in Colorado Springs. There are quite a few people who commute from up here to Colorado Springs to work. He drives 48 miles into work and crosses two mountain passes. Less miles than many people elsewhere drive to work. It takes him less time than people commuting from the south side <span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">to the north side <span style="font-family: georgia, "times new roman", serif;">of Colorado Springs to go to work. He enjoys his drive - he says it gives him time to decompress from work and this is the type of traffic congestion he has now.
