Weird Wednesday ~ Elf School

The Icelandic Elf School, otherwise known as Álfaskólinn in Iceland, teaches about the 'not so often seen' people of Iceland - 3 kinds of hidden people, 13 types of Elves, 4 varieties of gnomes, 2 forms of trolls, and 3 types of faeries.

The School, located in Reykjavik, has a full curriculum, publishes texts on hidden people (hidden people look just like humans but prefer to remain invisible), conducts ongoing research about elves and hidden people and collects stories about trolls, faeries, dwarves, and gnomes for future generations.

The School is open to both visitors and residents alike. The Certificate Program consists of a 5 hour course and has 5-10 people each time. While only 54% of Icelanders believe in elves or hidden people, a whopping 90% of the population does take notice of this 'hidden' community.

HAGS Theme of the week

The art theme for the week of October 12-18 is Trick-or-Treat, What's your Favorite Halloween Candy.

That's an easy answer! CANDY CORN!

And to represent this theme I have created a Fairy Door entitled Trick-or-Treat. A little ghost is going on his rounds in Fairyland getting his treats. Wonder if he has any chocolate in his bag??

I have also created some candy pockets to fill with treats to give to those little ghosts and goblins that come knockin' on your door on Halloween.

Both items are at auction on eBay.

Happy Haunting!

All Hallow's Eve

Halloween is a celebration of Spooks and Goblins, Spirits and Witches, Mysteries and Magick. What we now call Halloween actually evolved from an ancient European holiday known as All Hollow's Eve. This was the day supernatural spirits were known to wander the earth. It began as the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Samhain marked the moment when the veil between the living and the dead was lifted and the inhabitants of the two worlds could commune. For about 2000 years, October 31st meant bidding goodbye to summer, welcoming winter and remembering the dead. Samhain marked the death of the old year and the birth of the next. It was a day of the dead, a night of magick and mystery, a time when ghosts and lost souls roamed the land. According to legend, every Samhain the souls of the dead were set free by the Lord of the Dead. It was believed that many of these spirits then roamed the natural world searching for bodies to possess. Families began dressing in scary disguises and noisily marching around their neighborhoods to scare away these immortal souls. This practice became the origin of the modern Halloween tradition of wearing costumes. So the next time you are choosing what to be for Halloween, remember all those spirits looking for a strong healthy body to inhabit, and pick a costume that is truly terrifying!

Ghosts, Spooks, Haunts

One of the Art Groups to which I belong on eBay is called HAGS - Halloween Artists Gathering Spot. The Group has had a new theme every week beginning the end of September and continuing to October 25th. The members will create something in keeping with the current theme and then list the item(s) on eBay.

This week's theme is Ghosts/Goblins. I created three Fairy Doors with Ghosts for my submissions. All three of these Little Doors for the Fae Folk are currently listed on Ebay.

Even the Fae Folk celebrate Halloween! Happy Haunting!!
