Pepe came for a visit

What better way to celebrate May Day than with an odoriferous post!

A few weeks back Pepe came for a visit at our house and one of the Dogs encountered him. Actually, he showed up in the middle of the night.

One of the Dogs just HAD to go outside in the middle of the night. So Hubby gets up and lets the Dogs out - without thinking. Then we realized just why the Dog HAD to go outside. He had heard something lurking in the yard (why can't they do that when the Coon is snooping around?)

Well, Hubby let the Dog back in the house not realizing the Dog had been sprayed, Hubby just thought Dog had scared a skunk away from the yard. Dog then promptly came into our bedroom and immediately tried to rub the spray off his neck and chest onto our carpet! AUGH!!!!!

So, at 2am I ushered Dog back outside, Hubby to bed and set a bowl of vinegar in bedroom to kill some of the odor so Hubby could get some sleep. I then researched what to use on Dog. And carpet.

Long story short, I used hydrogen peroxide and baking soda on Dog. I made a mixture of the two with some added dog shampoo which contained coconut oil. I rubbed this mix into his fur especially around the neck and chest where the skunk had sprayed. I let it sit for about 5 minutes then added water and proceeded to wash Dog. Hubby came home later with a skunk deodorizer shampoo which worked very well.

Bedroom carpet was cleaned with skunk deodorizer shampoo and then again with regular rug shampoo. Dog also received another bath three days later. Faint odor lasted about 2 wks but Hubby said it was all in my head - he couldn't smell it.  I have since taken measures to help insure Pepe can no longer come to visit the yard. I have planted flowers on the outside of the fence!

In Memorium.......

Elvira
2007- 2017

A mommy dog you were
Teaching kids to walk by holding onto your fur.

You raised a batch of puppies with patience and with love
You may now rest, the coos you hear are doves.

May your food bowl always be full
May you run and play and cavort.
Elvira we miss you.
But you will always be in our heart.

Weird Wednesday ~ Dog Poop and Magnetism

Researchers from the Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague recently spent a two year period observing 70 canines while they 'did their business'. After watching 1,893 defecations and 5,582 urinations, the researchers came to the conclusion that dogs prefer to do their No.2s along the North-South axis under calm magnetic conditions. When the magnetic field was in flux, any directional behavior by the canine was absent.
This would explain why sometimes it takes forever for your Pooch to find just the right spot to relieve himself.
The results of this study prove that magnetic fields can impact animal behavior causing scientist to take the magnetic field into consideration when performing experiments. Biologists and Physicians will also have to consider the effects of magnetic storms and magnetic fluctuations on living organisms.

Cat Tales ~ 'Doggone Good Potting Soil'

Did you know that it is estimated that the 166 million cats and dogs in the U.S. produced about 15.4 million tons of droppings in 2011?

Mommy has been reading the newspaper again. This time she found an article about a local company, EnviroWagg, that takes the waste from dogs and turns it into potting soil! No $h!t! {{snicker}}

EnviroWagg has begun working with a local animal shelter to dispose of the 2.5 tons of droppings {{eeewwww}} the shelter generates every year. At EnviroWagg the droppings are mixed with sawdust, straw, pine bark, and other carbon sources, spiked with enzyme and heated to 145 degrees. Then it is tested to make sure it is pathogen-free. And the result is less landfill waste and some "Doggone Good" potting soil mix.

Finally! Those silly Doggies are good for something!

Cat Tales ~ Pet Food Stamps

Mommy was reading the Sunday paper yesterday when she found an article that she HAD to read to me! It was about a program that has been started to help out-of-work or low income people feed the four-footed members of their family.

Pet Food Stamps is a New York based non-profit that helps pet owners with food for their pets. And We all know how important Us furry kids are to people. Especially when Our Humans are going though tough times. We are able to give the love and companionship that is often missing from so many people's lives.

There are over 50 million Americans who currently receive Food Stamp assistance and many of those people have cats or dogs. All too often the cherished family pet must be surrendered to a shelter because the money is not there to buy pet food.

The Pet Food Stamp program, thanks to the generosity of contributors and patrons, is able  to eliminate that heart-wrenching decision by making sure pet owners are given free monthly home delivery of all necessary food supplies to maintain the health and vitality of their pets.

Please visit the website to learn more, apply for food stamps or make a donation. And if you know of someone who may need help, please refer them to the website.  Click Here!

The Myth of the Poop Fairy

Like the Loch Ness Monster or Bigfoot, the fabled Poop Fairy has been the stuff of legend. Flying undetected in parks, neighborhoods and schoolyards, she was said to follow close behind dogs and their owners — picking up what the dog left behind, before flying off to the next canine creation. A widespread belief that she existed seemed to reassure some that cleaning up after one’s dog was sort of … optional.
However, in response to a growing number of poop piles, and a growing number of citizen complaints, the Jefferson County (Colorado) Animal Control office has partnered with local park districts and homeowner associations to bring you this public service announcement:

Our Puppies....

I have to brag a bit.......

Hubby and I have three Alaskan Malamutes, Kenosha, Elvira, & Boreas.

Kenosha

Elvira and Fantum

And on occasion we will have a litter of puppies. The last litter we had was in the Autumn of 2008.

There were seven fluffy bundles of fur running around the house. Oh what fun that was! You can read about their exploits here, View From the Floor.

We kept Boreas, the first born boy.

And on occasion we receive news and pictures of his litter mates. But one of the litter stands out - Loveland. Her new Mommy has her started on a career that is most fulfilling - for everyone involved! She recently received a certification as a Therapy Dog from Therapy Dogs International. She works at a Nursing Home near where she and her Family live. Kudos to Loveland and her Mommy!
