Talking to Plants

Do you talk to your plants? I do.
Do your plants talk back? They will if you listen closely.

George Washington Carver discovered over 300 uses for the peanut plant. He said that he was told of these uses by the plant itself! Some people may feel this is quite far fetched but to those who are in tune to Nature, it is quite normal to have a conversation with a tree or flower or bush. Perhaps if we slow down and listen with our heart and soul rather than our ears and our mind, we will hear what the Flora is trying to tell us.
Experiments have been conducted on a plant's ability to communicate and the response of plants to Human interaction. These experiments have been performed by a variety of scientists worldwide as well as by 'lay people' like the Mythbusters. It has been proven again and again that plants will respond to certain types of noise better than others. Is it the actual noise or is it the vibrations created by the noise to which the plants respond?
Scientists in China discovered that crop plants will increase their yield when sound waves of certain frequencies are broadcast to them. The frequency levels at which plants respond are well out of the range of human hearing.
Plants also communicate among themselves, usually by scent. This has been proven again and again. But do they 'talk' to each other? In some sort of way that resembles human conversation? Maybe. A team of researchers are currently studying if some plants have specific requirements for sound and if some plants are more talkative than others.

Plants having the ability to communicate brings about another question. Do they have an intelligence? Do they have a soul? This is a topic that could cause quite a stir.
For over a 100 years, botanists have documented similarities between plants and animals. Which leads to the conclusion that plants are intelligent beings who can communicate not only with each other but with animals and humans. In fact the bond between a plant and a human can be so strong that the plant can sense things about its human, even if the human is many, many miles away.
Kinda gives a whole new meaning to "Tree Hugging".

Tidbits

A little humor to brighten your day.....

With warm weather just around the corner, I decided to move most of my plants out of my greenhouse. My dear Hubby offered to help with the really large pots (He's such a sweety!).

As he set down the last one and looked at it, he exclaimed, "Good Grief! That spider web is large enough to swallow Frodo! " (His philosophy regarding spiders - the only good spider is a flat spider)

My studio is upstairs but during the winter months I usually work downstairs because it is warmer. Needless to say, the floor is not always the cleanest in the area where I work. There is often paper or fabric scraps, bits of tinsel or glitter laying about.

Hubby (He's the BEST!) said, "Our house has more glitter on the floor than a Strip Club!" (It's not glitter or Faery Dust to him - it's Stripper Glitter) When I inquired as to how he knew about such things, he replied, "I seen it on TV." Hhhhmmmm.........

Because I would rather be creating than cleaning house, quite often the Dust Bunnies get rather large before they are whisked away. (We have A LOT of Hairy Animals!) But I don't worry until they threaten to take one of the Cats hostage!

Everyone has a photographic memory. Some just don't have the film.

January

January! Where would we Gardeners be without this month? I know, it's cold and dreary outside. The Holidays are over. The company has gone home. And how we long for those funny, sunny days of Spring!

And ALL those Plant and Seed catalogs we've been getting sure don't help the matter any!

They're such a tease! A taunt, if you will. Luring us into the depths of a gardener's would-be paradise! And I am as guilty as the rest. I look at those catalogs and dream about how my gardens would look with all those lovely flowers!

Imagining those luscious strawberries just waiting to be picked....

Smelling the fragrant perfume of the rose bush by the Garden Shed....

Seeing the butterflies and bees busy about their daily business amid the blossoms and blooms....

But we need this time to plan and sketch. And to dream. And then plan some more.

My gardens always start out with a grand design. (Whose wouldn't after looking at all those catalogs!) But they evolve over time. Usually for a much simpler, lower maintenance plan.

But that doesn't stop me from reading about and dreaming about all those wonderful plants that just won't grow here! And maybe thinking about getting just one more exotic plant for the Courtyard 'cause I know I can squeeze it into the greenhouse for the winter!

My plans this year aren't so much to add flowers, but to rearrange the ones I've already got. Shade envelopes more of a flower bed, as trees grow and their canopies enlarge. Some plants have outgrown their corner and are beginning to bully their neighbors. Others just don't like the neighborhood they're in. But I'm sure, I'll probably be able to find room for maybe one or two new acquisitions.

I must go now and look at the latest catalogs that came in today's mail!

I'll keep you posted on my finds ....
