The Land of Melting Shadows

There once was a land, no further away than your imagination. A Land where the Trees’ whispers can be heard on the wind. And the squirrels chitter and chatter as they scamper to and fro amongst the branches - playing their endless game of tag.

A Land where the Brooks babble endlessly amid fern covered banks. Fish and Tadpoles play a game of Leapfrog in the clear, cool water and Turtles sunbathe nearby.

A Land where the tall Grasses sway in the breeze as if dancing to a distant tune. Wild flowers wave their petals at the busy Bees who fly by; Beckoning to them. Enticing them.

A Land where the Deer graze peacefully in the lush, green valleys. A Land where the Birds and the Faeries gather in the bushes of an evening to share the day's gossip. And the Frog serenade, with Cricket accompaniment, continues well into the night.

A Land where the morning sun melts the night into the shadows of the day. And at sunset the shadows melt into night. But there are times when the shadows melt into things best left to one’s imagination.

Weird Wednesday ~ Plastic Eating Fungus!

A fungus has been discovered in the rain forests of Ecuador that consumes polyurethane, a polymer that is used in the making of everything plastic and synthetic. And it can do this in an environment which does not contain oxygen!

Every year more than 33 million tons of plastic is discarded every year by Americans! Of that, roughly 6.5% is recycled and 7.7% is combusted in waste-to-energy facilities. This fungus, Pestalotiopsis microspora, may very well be the answer our society has been needing.

Cat Tales ~ 'Doggone Good Potting Soil'

Did you know that it is estimated that the 166 million cats and dogs in the U.S. produced about 15.4 million tons of droppings in 2011?

Mommy has been reading the newspaper again. This time she found an article about a local company, EnviroWagg, that takes the waste from dogs and turns it into potting soil! No $h!t! {{snicker}}

EnviroWagg has begun working with a local animal shelter to dispose of the 2.5 tons of droppings {{eeewwww}} the shelter generates every year. At EnviroWagg the droppings are mixed with sawdust, straw, pine bark, and other carbon sources, spiked with enzyme and heated to 145 degrees. Then it is tested to make sure it is pathogen-free. And the result is less landfill waste and some "Doggone Good" potting soil mix.

Finally! Those silly Doggies are good for something!

Little Free Library

I ran across an article about "Little Free Libraries" in the newspaper recently and just had to share this wonderful idea!

Todd Bol has a dream - to promote literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges worldwide, to build a sense of community as we share skills, creativity and wisdom across generations, and to build 2,510 Libraries - as many as Andrew Carnegie - and maybe even surpass that number. His vision became the "Little Free Library" project.

Lovely small houses have been erected worldwide. Each little library is given a number and an official sign and then stocked with a variety of books. Readers are encouraged to leave a book for every book that they take. People are encouraged to leave a message inside the books which they trade. What better way to meet people and share a love of reading?
