My New View

Gomez isn't the only one with a new view!
I now see this on a regular basis. So much nicer than skyscrapers and smog!
I'll be posting more about these majestic mountains next month.

Pikes Peak

I remain ever hopeful to see Richard Dean Anderson....

Weird Wednesday ~ Dancing Cloud

Watch the center of the screen for the 'dancing cloud'.

From meteorologist, Joel Gratz:
The answer lies in this: ice crystals, especially long needles, tend to become aligned with the ambient electric field.
So what you are seeing is sunlight reflecting off ice crystal faces that are constantly being oriented by the developing electric field just above the [cumulonimbus] top. Then there is a discharge in the cloud, and the field collapses momentarily, and the crystals begin to realign again. Then this just keeps happening over and over.

Babies and Advertising

A new Baby will soon be welcomed into the Family. The lucky couple is my youngest son and his wife. They were the couple who got married last summer at the Amusement Park.

Baby Wyatt will be joining us in about a month. And to help welcome him, my Daughter and I threw a Baby Shower for the Mom-to-Be.

A staple of every Baby Shower are the games. Some are really corny and others are fun. My Daughter chose some fun ones. There was the 'scavenger hunt in a purse' game and we played 'match the price tag to the baby item', which is not as easy as it sounds if you don't have any smallish children. But the most fun one was about Babies in Advertising (Daughter works for an ad agency). Pictures of Ads containing Babies from the last century were printed out and each person had to guess what product was being advertised. Some of the ads were quite surprising! So I thought I'd share a few with you!

Weird Wednesday ~ Glass Beach

A beach located outside of Fort Bragg, California was used as a dump site by local residents in the early 20th century.  Everything from household trash to cars were thrown over the cliffs onto the beach. Fires were lit to reduce the size of the trash piles.

It wasn't until the 1960s that local leaders closed the beach to dumping and began clean-up programs. The worst and largest of the discarded items were taken away but years and years of wave action had broken down the glass and pottery, leaving them with smooth, rounded edges.

Today the beach is part of a California State Park and people are not allowed to remove any of the glass.

Roadtrip ~ Pioneer Cemetery

As all of you Faithful Readers out there know, no trip for Hubby & I would be complete without a visit to the local cemetery.

And Pioneer Cemetery which rests on a hill overlooking Glenwood Springs is a very special cemetery.

It is the resting place for Harvey A. Logan a.k.a Kid Curry who was a member of Butch Cassidy's gang.
And for Doc Holliday's gravestone.

No one knows for sure where John Henry Holliday a.k.a. Doc Holliday of OK Corral fame, is buried. But a memorial to this famous gunslinger has been erected and many people leave a token for him. Hubby had a bit of a smoke with Ol' Doc. And they talked about playing poker.

Heading up the trail toward the cemetery felt more like a pilgrimage than a hike. It was quite the trek up the hill!

There was even a tree festooned with ribbons and flags alongside the trail.

Many of the headstones we saw were newer - the originals having become part of the landscape around us.

The grave markers we see only represent some of the deceased buried here on this site. These are the remains of the hard working-class pioneers who's hands built Glenwood Springs. They were a multi-racial workforce of immigrants and recently freed slaves and others who came to love this land. Some are unknown.

Many of the names we saw were of children.

And the years 1918 - 1922 were a common thread amongst many of the names we read.

Epitaph not written in English.

Pioneer Cemetery is nice. A beautiful view and a nice old growth of trees give the residents a pleasant resting spot. I could have spent more time there.
